Denise Huxtable

Being that my DirectTV is kind enough not to record the episodes of Sex and the City that I've already watched, my recordings shrine have slowly shifted from a bunch of middle-aged white women living the A-List dream to an upper-middle class black family with the American dream. The freaking Cosby Show. Now, I'm not completely sure why it's called The Cosby Show considering that the family name is Huxtable, but I guess it's just because Bill Cosby is God. And when it comes down to it I only watch it for one stylish reason: Denise Huxtable.

Denise Huxtable aka Lisa Bonet aka Lilakoi Moon (I know, right) was deliciously fashion-forward in her over-sized blazer's, fully buttoned collared shirts, ultra shoulder pads and hats I would kill for. Even her hair styles were perfection.

My favorite thing about her look is that you can find essentially all of the pieces she wears in thrift stores. All you have to do is restrain yourself from either chopping off all of your hair...

Or starting the dreading process as soon as possible.

School Boys and School Girls

The year is 1976. Meet Kate and Trish.
Trish (Shelby) is the Rayanne Graff-esque school hooch. Kate (Miranda) is the Sandy Olsen-y cheerleader. By some teen movie constructed miracle, the two are best friends made in heaven.
The teen dreams spend their high school days gossiping, perfecting their outfits and doodling on their notebooks about their celebrity crushes and fave slang.
Of course, the two have their high school sweethearts. Trish and Joey (Julianne) are the bad-ass couple of the school. They're the Trip and Lux (had they actually lasted in TVS...), they parade around with every other person in school but always coming back to each other. (Awww?) Then, of course, there's Kate and Shane (Olivia) who are the cookie cutter jock and cheerleader couple...with a twist. Kate's barking up the wrong tree....but shhh!

The inspiration from this shoot came from Queen Tavi and her take on school girls. We realized that if we talked about vibes long enough, we'd actually get into character. Needless to say, the immortal Trish and Kate live on....

The Beautiful People

The thing about models... we all hate them. Their job is to be beautiful, I mean, what's that about? But they are beautiful. And skinny and rich and our age and get to wear Givenchy (*tear*). But every season we attach ourselves to a select few in the new batch of odd lineament-ed Lanvin-clad young girls (no? just me? okay). As far as I'm concerned, there are three types of models: The classy, the fierce, and the babies.

1940-1960 was pretty much the awakening of beautiful women in glossy magazines. These were the years of Sunny Harnett, Jean Shrimpton, and of course, the Mannequin of Mod, Miss Twiggy. These women were the base blocks upon which the fierce built their ever-chic houses. And, let's be honest, is there a classier generation than the 50's?

After that came the holy trinity. Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss who basically ruled the nineties and showed people across the globe that they could have their coke and eat it too.

But the past is the past, who really even cares? The whole point of high fashion is being in the now and staying clear of things that were so five minutes ago. The lovely Dutch sixteen-year-old, Daphne Groeneveld, managed to grace the catwalk in
Valentino, Chanel, and Dior Haute Couture shows in Paris, find her way onto the cover of Vogue Paris (a magazine I can't even afford to buy), oh, and she got dancing lessons from Madonna. In under two years into her career.

Then there's Lindsay Wixon who made Danielle Evans look like a fool for filling in her gap. Steven Meisel hand- selected her for an Italian Vogue shoot, for God's sake. Currently you can spot her on a Versace for H&M commercial alongside Daphne (and in the wise words of Bebe Zeva "TEMPTED TO START A FASHION HOUSE FOR NO OTHER REASON THAN TO *NOT* SELL OUT.") Lindsay's basically living on the catwalk these days and if you haven't fell for those pouty lips in B&W, there is no pleasing you.

Charlotte Free is a personified throw back. If you know anything about her, other than the fact that she has pink hair, then you get what I'm saying. Charlotte started out as talk of the town and a controversial catwalk choice, much like our now-legendary Kate Moss. But in Moss fashion, Charlotte Free is now one of the most wanted models of the season, pink hair and all.
